Abstract

1,020,115. Mechanical seals. CRANE PACKING Ltd. Jan. 5, 1965 [Jan. 7, 1964], No. 652/64. Heading F2B. [Also in Division F4] In a mechanical seal comprising rotating and non-rotating seal members 3 and 4 respectively, the non-rotating seal member 4 is cooled by liquid which is circulated substantially wholly by convection between a passage 7 in the member 4 and an external heat exchanger 9. The member 3 is mounted on a rotary shaft 1 and urged by springs (not shown) into facial contact with the member 4 which is secured to the shaft housing 2 by a ring 5. The passage 7 communicates via an offset bore 8 in the ring 5 with the heat-exchanger 9 which has fins 10 and is closed by a plug 11. As shown in Fig. 1 the bore 8 is joined to the passage 7 by an inclined portion 12. In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the bore 8 extends to the passage 7 and is divided by a wall 13 to promote circulation. In a further modification the heat exchanger is a helical coil and there are separate inlet and outlet bores at the top and bottom of the ring 5 connected to opposite ends of the coil. The cooling liquid may be a mixture of di-phenyl and di-phenyl ether or di-chloro-di-fluoromethane.
