Abstract
The invention comprises polyketones containing the repeating unit-CO-X-CO-Y, where X is <FORM:1019226/C3/1> and Y is <FORM:1019226/C3/2> A being -O-, -S-, -(CH2)n-, O(CH2)nO- or a direct linkage, B being -O-, -S- or -CH2-, and n is from 1 to 10; the aromatic nuclei may be substituted, e.g. by alkyl or alkoxy groups or by chlorine or fluorine atoms. The polyketones may be obtained by reacting the dianhydride of a tetracarboxylic acid or the monoanhydride monoacid chloride of a tricarboxylic acid, with a compound containing two aromatic nuclei not condensed with each other and having at least one position in each nucleus free of substitution. The polyketones are soluble in aqueous alkali. In examples polymers are obtained by reacting pyromellitic anhydride with diphenyl ether and with biphenyl, in the presence of aluminium chloride as a catalyst.
