Abstract

1,018,925. Sampling liquids. TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION. March 20, 1963 [April 5, 1962], No. 10999/63. Heading B8N. A device for obtaining liquid samples such as in the analysis of sewage comprises a take-off tube 24 having an inlet 48 and adapted to be moved into and out of a container 14 for the liquid to be sampled, the take-off tube being provided with an additional inlet 52 arranged to feed air or other inert gas into the sample liquid in the tube in order to divide the liquid into a series of segments L each separated by a gas segment A. The take-off tube 24 and a tube 50 connected to the inlet 52 are both coupled to a pump such that as liquid is drawn into the pipe 24 from the container 14, pressurized gas is forced into the inlet 52 via pipe 50 thereby segmentizing the liquid as shown in Fig. 3; the liquid samples, which are thus prevented from contaminating each other, are then fed to an apparatus for analysis. The take-off tube 24 may be raised from or lowered into different containers mounted on a rotary table.
