Abstract

An alcohol soluble polyester is made by reacting (a) an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol; (b) a polycarboxylic acid; and (c) a 4,4-bis (hydroxyphenyl) pentanoic acid of formula <FORM:1018305/C3/1> where R is chlorine, bromine or lower alkyl and n is 0, 1 or 2, or a mixture of such an acid with up to 60% mol. of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing 9-22 carbon atoms; the molar ratio of polycarboxylic acid to polyhydric alcohol being between 1: 7 and 6: 2 and the molar ratio of monocarboxylic acid to polyhydric alcohol being between 2: 7 and 8: 2. The reaction mixture may also include a minor amount of an aromatic monocarboxylic acid (e.g. benzoic, parato line or hydroxybenzoic acid). Specified for (a) are ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1: 2- or 1: 4-butanediol, 2: 5-pentanediol, 1: 6-hexanediol, neopentyl glycol, di- and poly-ethylene glycols, polypropylene glycols, trimethylol ethane, trimethylol propane, erythritol, pentaerythritol, polypentaerythritols, sorbitol, mannitol and polyallyl alcohol. Specified for (b) are adipic, malonic, azelaic, sebacic, succinic, maleic, fumaric, aconitic, carbic, phthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic, polyisophthalic, polyterephthalic and dimerized fatty acids. Inks are made by dissolving the resin in the solvent (e.g. ethyl alcohol diethylene glycol, butyl carbitol, butyl carbitol acetate, dimethyl phthalate, a mixture of dimethyl phthalate and diethylene glycol or a mixture of ethyl alcohol and methyl ethyl ketone) and adding a pigment (e.g. chrome green, carbon black or a mixture of phthalocyanine blue and aluminium oxide). Other synthetic resins may also be added (e.g. phenolformaldehyde, urea - formaldehyde, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl butyral, polymethyl methacrylate, a copolymer of ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate, ethyl cellulose, nitro-cellulose or cellulose acetate butyrate).
