Abstract
In a process for the preparation of aromatic amino compounds in a mixed solvent there is uses for the catalytic reduction of an aromatic nitro compound in liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst preferably a nickel catalyst, a mixture of a lower alcohol and an aromatic solvent as the reaction solvent. The mixed solvent preferably contains 40-5% by weight of an alcohol and 60-95% by weight of aromatic solvent. Specified lower alcohols are methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol. Specified aromatic solvents are benzene, toluene, xylene and halogenated benzenes such as monochlorobenzene, orthodichlorobenzene, metadichlorobenzene, paradichlorobenzene, mixed dichlorobenzenes, trichlorobenzene, bromobenzene. In an example a mixture of 2,4- and 2,6-dinitro-toluenes (2,4-isomer about 80% and 2,6-isomer about 20%), a mixed solvent of 142.5 parts of a dichlorobenzene and 7.5 parts of methanol, and finally a nickel-talc catalyst containing an amount of nickel corresponding to 0.5% per the amount of dinitrotoluene are fed sequentially into an autoclave and the reaction carried out under a pressure of 50 kg./cm.2, at 100 DEG C., and is finished after 40 minutes, the catalyst being filtrated off and tolylenediamine of 99% or higher in purity is obtained by distillation.
