7 - Cyclohexylheptan - 1 - ol and - 1,4 - diol are prepared by hydrogenating in presence of copper chromite at 230-260 atm. gauge pressure and 240-250 DEG C. a solution in an inert organic solvent of g -cyclohexylpropyl-g -butyrolactone. The starting material may be prepared by hydrogenating in presence of Raney Ni at 250 atm. and 220 DEG C. a dioxan solution of butyl b -[2-(5-phenyl)-furyl]-propionate.
