Abstract

In a hot pressing process of forming sintered bodies such as metals oxides, carbides or mixtures thereof e.g. Al2O3, UO2, Ba TiO3, WC, Mo and W the powder or precompacted pellet of the material is passed through the pressing mould under pressure and is heated as it passes through a heating zone. As shown in the Figure the apparatus comprises a mould 1 surrounded by a furnace 15, consisting of heating elements 16, induction or resistance heating, the elements heating only a part of the length of mould. An upper stamp 17 is hydraulically operated and a lower stamp 20 is driven via a screw spindle 21, screw threaded sleeve 22 and motor driven gear 23. In operation the lower stamp is raised to the position of the heating zone, powder e.g. Ni-Zn ferrite is introduced to partly fill the mould, and the top stamp 17 is moved downwards to compress the powder which moves through the <PICT:1017145/C6-C7/1> heat zone. The stamp 17 is lifted before all the powder is sintered and a further filling of powder is introduced. The pressing operation is then repeated until the required length of sintered body is obtained, the stamp 17 finally ejecting the body from the bottom of the mould. An asbestos plate 26 may be placed on top of the lower stamp 20 to prevent powder loss between the stamp and the mould wall. The mould may be made of alumina, silicon carbide or "Stellite" (Registered Trade Mark).
