Abstract

<PICT:1016875/C2/1> A substantially stable form of 6-[D( - )a -aminophenylacetamido] penicillanic acid having an infra-red absorption spectrum as shown in Fig. 3 is obtained by heating 6-[D( - )a -aminophenylacetamido] penicillanic acid at a temperature greater than 60 DEG C. in a liquid medium. The liquid medium may be (a) water, (b) a water-containing organic solvent, (b) an aliphatic or aromatic nitro-compound containing up to six carbon atoms, e.g. nitromethane or nitrobenzene or (d) an aqueous inorganic acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid. In the case of (d), the stable compound is recrystallized from the resulting solution by the addition thereto of a base, e.g. sodium hydroxide or triethylamine.
