Abstract
1,016,404. Safety fuzes. ENSIGN-BICKFORD CO. July 6, 1964 [Nov. 15, 1963], No. 27712/64. Heading F3A. A safety fuze has a core containing oxygen-sufficient self-burning material surrounded by a uniform thickness sheath of cellular structure plastics material. The core 12 comprises a pair of filaments 18 (of natural or synthetic cellulose yarns, glass, paper or textiles) surrounded by 10 grains/foot of black powder and enclosed in a casing 20 of cross spun strands 22 of jute. Around the core 12 is extruded the sheath 14 made from polyethylene and having the cellular structure 26 and a continuous outer skin 24, fire retardants such as antimony trioxide or chlorowax being incorporated in the polyethylene. In further embodiments the sheath 14 is enclosed by a vinyl jacket or strands of yarn and wax. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 815,534.
