Abstract

1,015,477. Mulling apparatus; continuous discharge mixers. JEFFREY GALION MANUFACTURING CO. June 3, 1964 [Dec. 27, 1963], No. 23075/64. Headings B1C and B2A. Apparatus for continuously mulling material e.g. foundry sand comprises a cylindrical drum 45, Fig. 5, having feed and discharge means at opposite ends thereof and a plurality of mulling assemblies 105a-105h rotatable with a shaft 85, each mulling assembly comprising a mulling wheel 135, Fig. 6, a drum 155 and a plow 170. Each mulling assembly is constructed on a frame the hub portion 108 of which is detachably secured to a partial hub 106 which is mounted on the shaft 85. Secured to the portion 108 are a pair of mounting arms 111, 112 the outer end of the arm 111 being formed with an integral sleeve 113, Fig. 9 (not shown), into the bore of which are press fitted a pair of torsion bushings 114 which receive a shaft 118 integral with a hub 117 to which is secured a lever 122 having outer and inner arms 125, 126 respectively. The arm 125 has an integral axle 127 on which is rotatably mounted a mulling wheel 135 provided with a rubber tyre 153. The arm 125 has a dam 155 adjustably secured thereto. Adjustably secured to the arm 126 is an eccentric disc 163 abutting the shaft 85, the position of the disc determining the position of the mulling wheel with respect to the wall of the drum. Mounting arm 112 has pairs of openings 165-167 to one pair of which plow 170 is secured, the pairs of openings being concentric about a centre lying in the leading edge of plow blade 175. The mulling assemblies are staggered along the length of the shaft 85 in the manner of a helix. Mulling assembly 105a is also provided with an accelerating plow 190, Fig. 5, having a blade 194. A sweeper blade 195 rotatable with the shaft 85 prevents packing at the discharge end of the drum. The drum has a lining 180 formed by a rubber sheet 185 in three peripheral sections backed by a metal sheet 184. Extending along the length of the drum is a hinged cover 55, Fig. 4 (not shown), which is raised and lowered by means of a pivotally-mounted pneumatic cylinder 58 controlled by a valve 65. The cover has a tail plate 66 . to which is secured a guide 67 within which is slidably supported a bolt 68. When the cover is moved to its open position, the bolt moves along a track 69 until the cover has reached its fully opened position when the bolt drops beyond the end of the track so that the cover is prevented from being inadvertently lowered or accidentally falling. The bolt has a pin 70 extending through a slot 71 in the guide 67 so that the bolt may be withdrawn into the guide when the cover is to be lowered. The drum has ribs 51 and two apertured ears 52 in which crane connections may be received for raising and lowering the drum. Foundry sand to be mulled is supplied from a conveyer belt 28, Fig. 1 (not shown), to a hopper 27 and thence through an opening 100, Fig. 6, in an end wall 49 of the drum. A bonding agent is supplied .from a hopper 33 to the sand on the belt 28 by means of a screw feed 32. Water is supplied to the sand on the belt through perforations in a transverse tube 37. Cooling air is conveyed by duct 40 through an opening 101 in the end wall 49. Mulled sand is discharged through an opening 38 in the drum and passes to a conveyer 39.
