Abstract

A process for the production of highly elastic fibres and films with an elastic elongation of 200-800% from polymers comprising urethane groups and prepared in the melt from a polyisocyanate, polyhydroxyl compound and chain extender by the isocyanate polyaddition process, comprises forming a solution of the polymer prepared in the melt and containing one or more compatible substances capable of fixing the orientation of stretched fibres or films formed from the solution under the action of heat and/ or radiation, shaping the polymers in known manner to form fibres or films, and then orientating the fibres or films by applying heat and/or radiation while in the stretched condition. The process of the parent Specification is modified in that the polymers comprising urethane groups are prepared in the melt instead of in solution. Specified compatible substances are formaldehyde, substances splitting off or reacting like formaldehyde, e.g. melamine hexymethylol ether, a peroxide or an azonitrile. In an example, a polyurethane composition made from a melt of an adipic acid-ethylene glycol/ butane diol copolymer, diphenylmethane-4,41-diisocyanate, butane - 1,4 - diol, titanium dioxide and ferric acetyl acetonate is dissolved in dimethylformamide, a solution of melamine hexamethylol ether in dimethyl formamide is added, and the mixture spun into heated air. The filaments are heated on the spool, while in a stretched condition.
