Abstract

A method of making a finely divided synthetic linear polyamide capable of forming a stable dispersion, comprises degrading a polyamide by mildly hydrolysing it with a dilute mineral acid at a temperature above 50 DEG C. to obtain a water-insoluble, readily attritable material which is then mechanically attrited. Swelling agents may be added prior to or after attrition to produce stable dispersions. Specified polyamides are those derived from diamines and dicarboxylic acids or from aminocarboxylic acids. Specified mineral acids are hydrochloric, sulphuric and nitric acid. Specified swelling agents are dilute aqueous solutions of C1 to C6 aliphatic acids e.g. formic, acetic, dichloracetic and trichloracetic acid, aqueous, phenol, cresol or resorcinol, water, sugar solutions, polyols e.g. glycerol and alcohols e.g. ethanol and isopropanol. Shaped articles may be produced from the stable dispersions by extruding or casting the dispersion in the desired shape and then washing or immersing the article in water or a dilute alkaline solution. Polyhexamethylene adipamide is the exemplified polyamide.
