Abstract
An olefin oxide is produced by the dehydrohalogenation of a halohydrin in aqueous solution containing free hydrogen halide by reducing the amount of free hydrogen halide in the feedstock by adding a base and then subjecting the resulting solution to conditions for the dehydrohalogenation of the halohydrin in the presence of a base. Preferably the free hydrogen halide is reduced by bringing it to a r H equal to or more than 5. The base used may be organic, for example a quaternary ammonium hydroxide, but is preferably inorganic. The base is added at a temperature not higher than 90 DEG C. The process may be used for the treatment of chlorohydrins or bromohydrins. The dehydrohalogenation is carried out by known methods, for example, treatment with a further quantity of the base at 90-110 DEG C. Examples are given of the treatment of propylene and butene. Chlorhydrins to give the corresponding oxirane compounds.
