Abstract

The invention comprises compounds having the formula <FORM:1015016/C2/1> wherein R represents a hydrogen atom, or an acyl group being the residue of a carboxylic acid, A represents either a hydroxy group, the oxygen atom =O of a keto group or together with B represents a 9(11) double bond; and B represents either a hydrogen atom, or together with A a 9(11) double bond, and a process for the preparation thereof in which a compound of the formula <FORM:1015016/C2/2> is reacted with a ketalizing agent to form the corresponding 20-ethylene ketal, treating said 20-ketal with an alkali-metal borohydride to obtain 16a ,17a - epoxy - 20 - ethylenedioxy - 3a ,11b - dihydroxy - 5b - pregnane, esterifying this compound in 3-position and dehydrating the 3-ester to obtain 3-acyloxy-16a ,17a -epoxy-20 - ethylenedioxy - 5b - pregn - 9(11) - ene. As alkali metal hydride there may be used potassium borohydride, and as dehydrating agent methanesulphonyl chloride may be employed.
