Abstract

[Also in Divisions B6 and D1] A process for coating a sheet 10 of a first plastics material with an emulsion of a second plastics material, the latter preferably having a higher melting point than the first material, comprises passing the sheet under a series of rotating brushes 19, the brushes having hollow stems 20 through which the emulsion is supplied. Alternatively, the sheet 10 may be coated by passing it around a roll partially immersed in a trough of the emulsion. In the preferred embodiment, a sheet of low density polyethylene is coated with polyvinylidene chloride; alternative combinations of coatings and layers respectively are: polyvinylidene resins and polyvinyl resins; polypropylene and polyethylene ; polyethylene terephthalate with polyvinyl resins or polyvinylidene chloride; polyamides and polyethylenes; and high density polyethylene with low density polyethylene. Following the coating, the emulsion is dried either by radiant heaters or by passing the sheet 10 in festoon-fashion over a series of rollers whilst subjecting it to a blast of hot air.
