Abstract

1,014,431. Automatic flow control. G. & J. WEIR Ltd. Feb. 26,1964 [Feb. 12, 1963], No. 5675/63. Heading G3R. A distilling plant for producing distilled water from sea water at brine comprises an evaporator 10 and a condenser 11, the distilled water being taken from the condenser 11 via a line 31 and pumped by means of a pump 21 through a flow meter 13 which has a light source 14 and a photoelectric unit 15 associated therewith so as to produce a signal representing the flow of distillate 29, the signal being amplified by a transistor amplifier 18 to control a motorized valve 19 controlling the flow of heating fluid 28 to the heating coils 12 of the evaporator 10 thereby to maintain constant the output of the distillate 29. The flow meter 13 is of the type having a weight which is movable in a tube according to the flow through the meter thus varying the incidence of the light impinging on the photo-cell unit. An air pump 23 is used to exhaust the casing 24 to lower the boiling point of the brine and a pump 20 is included to drain steam condensate from the heating tubes 12. A weir plate 22 together with a non-return valve 25 and ejector 26 limits the amount of brine in the evaporator.
