Abstract
The dye affinity of certain polyesters is improved by incorporating in them, during or after their manufacture, from 0.1 to 20 mol per cent (based on the difunctional acid component of the polyester) of a sulphonamide, phosphonate or phosphinate. The polyester is derived from a difunctional acid component at least 80 mol per cent of which is terephthalic acid and a dihydric alcohol component at least 75 mol per cent of which is a C2-C10 polymethylene glycol or a C6-C8 alicyclic glycol. The polyester forming components may also include inorganic or organic branching agents. A polyoxyethylene glycol component may also be included in the polyester by (a) including a polyoxyethylene glycol as a reactant, (b) effecting polyesterification in the presence of an acid compound which dehydrates some of the ethylene glycol or (c) by melt blending the polyester with a polyester containing a polyoxyethylene glycol component. Polyesterification may be effected in the presence of the usual catalysts and phosphorus-containing stabilizers. The sulphonamide may be aliphatic or aliphalic or it may be a low polymer and the phosphonate and phosphinate may be aliphatic or aromatic. In Examples (1)-(6) and (8) various sulphonamides, phosphinates or phosphonates were added to polyesters made by reacting dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol (with or without dimethyl 5-aminoisophthalate); the addition being made either during or at the end of the polycondensation reaction. In Example (7), various additives were added to a melt blend of polyethylene terephthalate and polydiethylene terephthalate.
