Abstract
High impact strength polymers are produced in bead form without substantial formation of emulsion polymer by (1) bulk polymerizing a mixture of 20 to 100% of a monovinyl aromatic monomer and up to 80% of an ethylenic comonomer in the presence of a rubbery polymer of a C4-C6 diolefin to a conversion of 15 to 40% of monomer, and (2) containing polymerization to a conversion of at least 70% in suspension in an aqueous medium which contains an anionic surfactant, a polyvinyl alcohol suspending agent and an electrolyte, e.g. sodium, potassium or calcium chloride, or sodium nitrate. Rubbers specified are copolymers of butadiene and isoprene with styrene and acrylonitrile, polychloroprene and high cis-1,4-polybutadiene. Vinyl aromatic monomers specified are styrene and alkyl, aryl and halo derivatives thereof. Comonomers specified are unsaturated acids, esters, amides, nitriles, ethers, ketones and halogenated hydrocarbons. Preferred anionic surfactants are sodium stearate and sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate. Polymerization is carried out in the presence of peroxide catalysts, preferred being di-tert.-butyl peroxide, tert.-butyl peracetate, tert.-butyl perbenzoate, and mixtures thereof. The examples describe polymerizing styrene and mixtures thereof with acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate in the presence of a butadienestyrene copolymer, and polymerizing styrene in the presence of a polybutadiene having a cis-1,4 content of 95%.
