Abstract

1,013,142. Universal joints. WILLIAM MOSELEY (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Sept. 24, 1962 [Sept. 7, 1961], No. 32138/61. Heading F2U. Universal joints for connecting a shaft 3, which may be a tractor crank-shaft, to a shaft 4, e.g. the shaft of a pump, each comprise a pair of splined sleeves 7, 10 formed with radial clearance 13 between their teeth, a continuous ring 15 preventing radial movement between the two sleeves but permitting tilting. As shown, the ring 15 is in two parts 14, 14a and fits into a groove in the inner sleeve 7 so as to project radially above the tips of the inner spline teeth, thus filling the radial clearance 13. Alternatively, the ring 15 may consist of a ring-shaped rib integral with one or of the two splined sleeves 7, 10.
