Abstract

A polymerization accelerator composition for use with peroxide-catalysed unsaturated polyester resins comprises an aqueous emulsion of dimethylaniline, a quaternary ammonium salt and an emulsifiable tertiary aliphatic amine which is a condensation product of ethylene oxide and a fat acid amine. The quaternary ammonium salts may be alkylammonium halides or alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium halides. The tertiary amine is exemplified by a commercial condensate of 11 mols. ethylene oxide with long chain aliphatic amines derived from fat acids. In examples, the emulsion is used to accelerate the polymerization, using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst, of (1) a polyester from ethylene glycol, maleic and phthalic anhydrides and adipic acid with methyl styrene as comonomer, and (2) a polyester from ethylene and propylene glycols, maleic and lauric acids and phthalic anhydride with styrene as comonomer.ALSO:A polymerization accelerator composition (see Division C3) comprises an aqueous emulsion of dimethyl aniline, a quaternary ammonium salt and an emulsifiable tertiary amine which is a condensate of ethylene oxide with fat acid amines. The quaternary ammonium salts may be alkyl ammonium halides or alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium halides and the tertiary amine is exemplified by a commercial condensate of 11 moles ethylene oxide with long chain aliphatic amines derived from fat acids.
