Abstract
A refractory silica brick contains by weight 1-10% titanium dioxide, and 5.30% silicon carbide, based on the total composition; the silica content is preferably constituted 20-30% by flint and the remainder by quartzite. The brick is made by conventional pressing drying and firing of the refractory composition with, for example, lime and a temporary binder such as sulphite lye; 1-2% iron sulphate or iron oxide (Fe2O3 and/or Fe3O4) may be included in the composition for improved fired strength. The titania and silicon carbide should be finely powdered, i.e. ground to pass a 200 B.S.S. Firing is controlled to give a brick of final specific gravity 2.33-2.37.
