Abstract

A golf ball consists essentially of a vulcanized composition the polymeric component of which is at least one synthetic trans-polymer of a conjugated diolefin hydrocarbon containing up to eight carbon atoms in the molecule, optionally in admixture with a minor proportion of a rubbery hydrocarbon polymer. In the examples, the polymeric component of the ball is either wholly trans-polyisoprene, a blend of trans-polyisoprene and a polybutadiene, or an inner core contains trans-polybutadiene and an outer covering contains trans-polyisoprene. Other specified dienes are piperylene and 2,3-di-methyl - 1,3 - butadiene. Suitable rubbery hydrocarbon polymers are natural rubbers, 1,4-polyisoprene, polymers of butadiene and piperylene, copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile and copolymers of ethylene and propylene. The polymer has a trans-content of at least 80%. Vulcanization is effected by heat, vulcanizing agents and pigments being added to the mix.ALSO:Golf balls, having a high resistance to cut, consist essentially of a vulcanised composition the polymeric component of which is at least one synthetic trans-polymer of a conjugated diolefin hydrocarbon containing up to eight carbon atoms in the molecule, optionally in admixture with a minor proportion of a rubbery hydrocarbon polymer. The balls may be made wholly of one composition or an inner core may be made of one transpolymer containing composition and an outer covering made of another trans-polymer containing composition.
