Abstract
<PICT:1012689/C6-C7/1> A plasma-jet spray gun for spraying metal powder, e.g. Mo or Al or two different metals simultaneously, has a nozzle assembly including an outer structure and a preselected one of a plurality of inner structures 205, Fig. 1, each structure having openings 210 for directing metal powder into the flowing plasma at a particular angle or angles and the openings of different inner structures directing the powder at different angles. The arc is produced between an electrode 167 and the inner structure 205. Plasma forming gas is supplied at 115. As shown in Fig. 1, the openings 210 discharge powder perpendicularly to the direction of plasma flow but Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) illustrate discharge openings inclined in upstream and downstream directions respectively whereas Fig. 4 shows openings 235 which discharge both upstream and downstream. The plasma forming gas may be a mixture of N2 and H2 and the powder may be projected into the tube 255 with N2. The gun is water-cooled having a water inlet 111 and outlet 113, part of the water cooling the inside of the electrode 167 and part cooling the gun body. The main body 101 of the gun is of an insulator such as nylon. The electrode 167 is maintained electrically negative and the nozzle 135 is usually grounded. The connection to the electrode is through a terminal 253 on the water inlet nipple 111.
