Abstract

1,012,641. Laminates. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Jan. 9, 1963 [Jan. 30, 1962], No. 3399/62. Drawings to Specification. Heading B5N. Flame-resistant belting comprises cover plies of fabric impregnated on their outer faces with a vinyl composition and on their inner faces with polychloroprene and/or butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber which is also used to impregnate any inner fabric plies between the cover plies, the edges of the cover plies terminating adjacent to edge strips of a material which is compatible with the composition used to impregnate the fabric plies. The material of the edge strips comprises 20% to 60% of a vinyl polymer, e.g. P.V.C., or a vinyl copolymer, with either polychloroprene, butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber, or both, the proportions of the latter being 0-50% and 0-75% respectively of the total polymer content, but preferably at least 5% of each is included. The vinyl composition used to impregnate the outer faces of the cover plies may be (1) polyvinyl chloride, or (2) copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride or vinyl acetate, or (3) blends of vinyl compounds with butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber. Finishing sheets of polyvinyl chloride composition may also be applied to the outer faces of the cover plies. The edge strips may be T-shaped, U- shaped or rectangular in cross-section, the edges of the fabric plies being trimmed back to suit. The inner fabric plies may be narrower than the cover plies, the overlapping edges of the latter being brought together and a U-shaped edging strip placed over them. The assembled plies and edging strips are consolidated by heat and pressure.
