Abstract

1,012,069. Standby systems for auxiliary lighting apparatus. MAINTENANCE CO. Inc. Nov. 27, 1963 [Dec. 6, 1962; Sept. 24, 1963], No. 46883/63. Heading H2H. [Also in Division F4] An emergency lighting system comprises an auxiliary lamp 36 supplied from a standby battery 44 when the main A.C. supply to the normal lighting system fails. During normal operation when the A.C. supply exists and is supplying the primary winding 47 of a transformer 42, the battery 44 receives a charge from the secondary winding 49 of the transformer by way of a half wave diode 50 thus maintaining the battery in a charged condition. Whilst A.C. is being supplied to the circuit and because of the values of the circuit components 56, 58, 60, 62, 64 a silicon controlled rectifier 54 receives gating pulses such that it passes a small current sufficient to warm the filament of the auxiliary lamp 36. Upon failure of the A.C. supply the polarities in the circuit reverse causing the rectifier 54 to receive a large gating pulse rendering it continuously conductive causing full illumination of the auxiliary lamp 36. Upon restoration of the A.C. supply the system reverts to normal operation. Components 55, 57, 59 protect the rectifier 54 against transient conditions. Specification 1,012,068 is referred to.
