Abstract

Thermal carbon black, characterized by a particle size distribution of between 30 and 60% in the range 45 to 85 millimicrons, no less than 90% in the range 25 to 205 millimicrons and preferably having an arithmetic mean of from 75 to 125 millimicrons, and by a surface area of from 15 to 30 square metres per gram, may be made by flowing a gas mixture containing hydrocarbon and from 8 to 70% by volume of an oxide of carbon through a hot zone at a temperature of from 1800 DEG to 2900 DEG F., the flow being at a space velocity preferably of from 0.105 to 0.873 per second. The hot zone may be provided in a tube of inert refractory material, for example silicon carbide, quartz, alumina or mullite. The gas mixture, which preferably contains one volume of hydrocarbon gas for each 0.3 to 2.0 volumes of oxide of carbon, may be natural gas containing 33 to 70% of carbon dioxide when the temperature is preferably from 2550 DEG to 2750 DEG F. The gas mixture preferably is free from oxygen, but may contain hydrogen, for example by using "methanol synthesis" gas (composition given in the Specification) which also contains the necessary oxide of carbon.
