Abstract
1,011,623. Tape-embossing implements. B. E. BOGEAUS. Oct. 18, 1963 [March 18, 1963], No. 41338/63. Heading B6F. [Also in Division B4] An implement for embossing tape 42, such as plastic, for making labels comprises a body part 14 with a handle 16 fixed thereto, and a movable handle 18 pivoted to the body 14 about an axis 20 and spring-biased away from the handle 16, the handle 18 having beyond the pivot 20 an extension 54 which, when the handles 16, 18 are moved towards one another, operates a tape-feed means through a pivoted bar 72 which receives a greater angular movement than the handle 18, thus permitting operation of the implement by a small movement of the handle 18 and without the handles 16, 18 being closed completely on one another. The extension 54 has an opening through which the bar 72 passes so that a pawl end 78 on the bar can engage a ratchet wheel 64 fast with a rubber-like feed-wheel 62 for the tape 42. Ledges 108, 110 on the part 54 engage the sides of the bar 72 which has a slot 106 engaging a fixed pivot 60 and can be moved by a knob 82 so as to withdraw the pawl 78 from the ratchet wheel 62 against the action of a leaf spring 80. A spring 58 biases the handle 18 away from the handle 16. The tape 42 passes from a magazine 34 frictionally held in a recess 102 in the body 14, through a channel 92, between the feedroller 62 and a pressure spring 44 along a guide 96 in a cover plate 24, between mating embossing dies 30 to a delivery opening 48 adjacent to which is a knife 88 operated by a fingerpiece 122. The dies 30 are formed on two discs which can be set by means of a pointer 32, Fig. 1 (not shown), to bring a selected character adjacent to the tape and to an anvil 56 fixed to the extension 54 of the handle 18. After the dies 30 have been set, operation of the handles 16, 18 moves the anvil 56 to engage the dies and cause the tape to be embossed. At the same time, the ledge 108 moves the pawl 78 away from the ratchet wheel 62. Upon release of the handle 18, the spring 58 returns the handle and its extension 54 back to their initial positions, Fig. 4, and during this movement the ledge 110 moves the pawl 78 into engagement with the ratchet wheel 64 to rotate the feed roller 62 and move the tape 42 forward one step. The character embossed on the tape is then visible at an opening 26 (Fig. 1) (not shown), in the cover-plate 24. The feed roller 62 may be rotated in either direction by an external knob 22, Fig. 1 (not shown), fixed to its shaft 20, the pawl 78 having previously been moved clear of the ratchet wheel 64 by means of the knob 82. A spring detent 104 engaging the ratchet wheel 64 allows the wheel to rotate in either direction and indicates aurally the number of teeth through which the wheel has been rotated. In modifications, the detent 104 can be replaced by a spring detent engaging internal teeth on the knob 22, Figs. 12, 13 (not shown), and the spring 44 engaging the feed roller 62 can be replaced by a small roller 134, Fig. 11 (not shown), pressed against the roller 62.
