Abstract
A method of making an aqueous impregnating liquid poor in electrolyte and containing a thermo-setting reaction product of phenol, a cresol or a mixture of cresols of phenol and one or more cresols comprises reacting the phenol(s) with from 1.5 to 3.0 gram moles of formaldehyde per gram mol of phenol at elevated temperature in an aqueous medium at a pH of 7.0 to 8.0 achieved by the presence of a basically reacting alkaline earth compound or an aliphatic tertiary amine which is not incorporated in the resin molecule, the reaction continuing until a reaction product has been formed in which at least 1.2 gram mol of formaldehyde are bound per mol of hydroxybenzene. Acids which are incorporated in the resin molecule, e.g. boric acid, m-cresotinic acid, phenol-carboxylic acids, aminocarboxylic acids or aminosulphonic acids, are preferably added to the reaction products. The examples describe the preparation of impregnants from:-(I) phenol, formalin, triethylamine and stearylamide, boric acid being added to the product; (II) phenol, paraformaldehyde, formalin, triethylamine and stearylamide, boric acid being added to the product; (III) m- and p-cresol, formalin, calcium hydroxide and cetyl alcohol, m-cresotinic acid being added to the product; and (IV) phenol, formalin, calcium hydroxide and cetyl alcohol, boric acid being added to the product. The resultant solutions are used for impregnating paper sheets which are stacked and laminated under heat and pressure.
