Abstract
Polycarbonates are made by reacting 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutane diol (or an ester thereof) with a di-ester of carbonic acid. Reaction is effected at 50-350 DEG C. possibly in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. magnesium, lithium hydroxide, lithium acetate, zinc oxide, lead oxide, manganese dioxide, a titanium ester or an alkyl zinc. The reaction mixture may also include (a) another dihydric alcohol, which may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic; (b) a dihydric phenol which may be a bisphenol, a dihydroxybenzene, a dihydroxybiphenyl or a dihydroxynaphthalene; (c) a dicarboxylic acid (or an ester or anhydride thereof), which may be saturated or unsaturated aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic; (d) a hydroxycarboxylic acid which may be aliphatic or aromatic, and in which all three reactants may be reacted simultaneously or the di-ester of carbonic acid may first be reacted with the cyclobutanediol and the resulting bis-(carbonate ester) then reacted with the hydroxy acid. In examples polymers were made by reacting 2,2,4,4 - tetramethyl - 1:3 - cyclobutanediol and diphenyl or dibutyl carbonate, possibly together with bisphenol A, 2,2-(4,41-dihydroxy-3, 31-dimethoxy-diphenyl) propane, 2,2-(4,41-dihydroxy -3,31 - dimethyl - diphenyl) propane or adipic acid.
