Abstract
In a process for producing a hydrogen-containing gas by reacting steam with gaseous or liquid hydrocarbons containing one to eight carbon atoms the hydrocarbons in admixture with hydrogen are first passed over a catalyst-containing molybdenum and zinc oxide to convert the sulphur compounds in the hydrocarbons into compounds which can be absorbed, e.g. by passage through a bed of zinc oxide, thereafter the purified hydrocarbons are mixed with steam so that the steam/carbon ratio is between 3 and 5 when the temperature of the mixture has been raised to between 550 DEG and 620 DEG C. and the hydrocarbon/steam mixture is passed over a catalyst-containing nickel, preferably between 10 and 20% of nickel, on a silico-alumina or -magnesia support at a pressure of from 1 to 25 kg./sq. centimetres and a final temperature of from 650 DEG to 850 DEG C. The desulphurizing catalyst may contain copper oxide and the hydrocarbon/steam conversion catalyst may contain an activator such as cerium, yttrium, thorium, zirconium, molybdenum, vanadium or tungsten oxide.
