Abstract

1,009,945. Fishing reels. WESTERN HARCOURT AMERT. Sept. 12, 1963, No. 36039/63. Heading AlA. In a spinning reel comprising a cup 24 rotatable about a stationary spool 26 to wind the line thereon, a pick-up finger 106 on the cup is moved between operative and inoperative positions by a cam 77 and a cam follower 87 mounted in a recess in the rearward face of the bottom plate 71 of the cup, the arrangement being that when the direction of rotation of the cup is changed the cam performs a limited rotative movement relative to the cup causing the cam follower to pivot about a pivot pin 86. The pick-up finger 106 is on the end of a shaft 96 having a crank pin 97 extending through an opening in the cup to engage a slot 93 in the cam follower. The cam is held between a flange 78 on the end of a fixed fitting 59 and a fixed boss 58 on the housing 21 of the reel but has no direct connection with the cup. When however the cup is rotated the cam is rotated by the cam follower. Fig. 5 shows the positions of cam and follower when the cup is being rotated in a clockwise direction. When the rotation is reversed the cam initially remains stationary until the cam follower is carried by the cup into engagement with the other end of the same cam surface 81. The cam then rotates but the friction between the cam and the flange 78 and boss 58 causes the cam follower to pivot about its pin 86. The pick-up finger carries a roller 107 of hyperbolic contour and its end has an arcuate inner face complementary to a ramp 117 on the forward flange of the stationary spool 26. The hollow spindle 63 driving the cup has a worm 64 meshing with a gear 56 on a shaft 32 rotated by a crank 33. The latter is pivotally connected by a pin 36, Fig. 12, to the flattened end of the shaft 32 and a nut 41 is threaded on to the end of the shaft. When the nut is screwed away from the crank the crank may be pivoted inwardly and when the nut is screwed towards the crank it forces the crank into operative position perpendicular to the shaft. The inner end of the shaft 32 carries a ratchet (Fig. 11, not shown) engaged by a pivoted spring biased dog to ensure that the cup can be rotated in the winding-in direction only. The dog can be withdrawn to allow rotation in both directions by a shaft extending through the housing and having an eccentric pin engaging in a slot in the dog. The spool 26 is connected to the forward end of a shuttle rod 66 reciprocable inside the hollow spindle 63 and connected at its rear end to an S-shaped shuttle 67 having a slot 69 through which extends an eccentric pin 57 on the gear 56. The connection between the spool 26 and the shuttle rod 66 allows rotation of the spool against adjustable resistance and comprises a hollow nut 149, Fig. 9, containing a member 152 threaded on to the end of the shuttle rod 66 and held by means of a pin 153 from rotation but not from sliding movement relative to the nut. A rubber tension washer 156 is disposed between the threaded member and the base 154 of the nut so that as the nut is turned the pressure exerted by the base against a pressure collar 146 mounted against rotation on the end of the shuttle rod is varied. The pressure collar in turn bears against a spool collar 126 which can rotate and has a hexagonal end engaging in a hexagonal socket in the rear face of the spool. The latter is detachably connected to the spool collar 126 by a spring 131 fixed to the rear flange of the spool and extending through a keyway in the spool to the front flange thereof. A detent 137 in the spring engages a groove in the spool collar. A drag dog is pivoted to the spool and urged by a spring into engagement with a click gear 141 secured to the shuttle rod. A line holder 122 of springy material bears against the forward flange of the spool and a hole 123 is provided for passing the end of the line through the flange to the holder.
