Abstract
1,009,828. Wells &c. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Sept. 28, 1964, No. 39511/64. Heading E1F. Hydrocarbons are produced from a permeable formation 1 having an injection well 4 and a production well 5 by injecting fluid hotter than the formation into the well 4, producing hydrocarbons from the well 5, and after the fluid has reached the well 5 reducing the pressure within the pores of the parts of the formation contacted by the fluid to a pressure less than that in the pores of the rest of the formation. A line of injection wells may have one or two parallel lines of production wells, or an injection well may be surrounded by production wells. The inlet to the well 5 may be below the bottom of the formation to trap any steam formed. The pressure is reduced by decreasing the flow resistance in the formation about the well 5 by fracturing the formation, by decreasing resistance to flow at the outlet of the well 5, by increasing the pumping rate from the well 5, and by decreasing the rate of injection into the well 4. Drive fluids may be injected outside this area affected by the hot fluid.
