1,009,699. Indicating angular or linear displacement optically. AMERICAN DESIGN ENGINEERING CORPORATION. April 25, 1963 [May 14, 1962], No. 16308/63. Headings G1J and G1M. Apparatus for determining the relative position of a pair of relatively movable elements 1, 2 provided in their respective overlapping regions with graduations 3 in the form of transparent zones of equal effective size and shape, the spatial density of zones on one element being slightly different from that on the other, is arranged so that the zones 3 co-operate to define an index pattern 9 having a varying dimension in the direction substantially normal to the direction of relative movement of the elements, making the pattern 9 readily discernible. The elements may be discs relatively rotatable about their common centre and if one has 360 zones and the other 366 equally spaced circumferentially at the same radius then the pattern 10 can be used to indicate minutes against a scale 11. Linear displacement can be determined by arranging straight lines of zones on two strips at densities of e.g. 200 and 201 zones to 2 inches respectively. The shape of the pattern 9 is determined by the shape of the individual zones and its size by the size, spacing and relative densities of the zones, several examples being described.
