Abstract
A bipolar electrode assembly for use in an electrolytic chlorate cell includes an electrically conductive electrode support member, at least two electrically conductive current distribution rods embedded in support member at the top, elongated grooves on the side of each support member, and electrodes positioned in each of <PICT:1009459/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1009459/C6-C7/2> the grooves one above the other and parallel to each other. As shown, the electrode blades 1 are of graphite and are supported in graphite end blocks 2, each of which receives two copper rods 5 each fixed in a screw-threaded graphite collar 4 which enters the block in which it is fixed by a tamped amalgam joint. Between the end blocks the electrode blades 1 are supported by insulating spacers 9, seven electrode blades being disposed one above the other in each end block groove. Clamps 6 engage the collar members 4 and the rubber lined cell cover 7. Instead of graphite end blocks, steel end blocks with grooves receiving the electrodes and covered with rubber where exposed directly to the electrolyte may be used.
