1,009,166. Reactor control rods. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Oct. 4, 1963 [Oct. 5, 1962], No. 39193/63. Heading G6C. A nuclear reactor control rod mechanism has provision for inserting a member into a core either as a control rod, or as an emergency shutdown rod; the mechanism comprises a tube enclosing a screw jack, a neutron absorbing member whose upper end is a piston, a reservoir of compressed gas, and an electromagnet which retains the piston against an aperture in the gas reservoir in such a way that, on de-energizing of the electromagnet, the neutron absorbing member is simultaneously dropped and propelled by pressure from the gas reservoir. The neutron absorbing rod is boron or cadmium, and in control operation is moved axially by a rotating screw driven by a control motor. When the control rod is released to function as a safety rod, the last part of its descent is retarded by means of a dashpot, a helical spring, and a stack of cupped discs. A signal indicating that the safety rod has dropped away from the associated control drive mechanism is derived from a hollow solenoid from which is withdrawn a metal probe integral with the absorbing rod. Provision is made for recovering the absorbing rod simply by lowering the normal control mechanism until contact is reestablished between the electromagnet and the piston.
