Abstract
1,008,430. Ordnance recoil mechanism. MINISTERO DELLA DIFESA ESERCITO DIREZIONE GENERALE ARTIGLIENA. June 23, 1960, No. 18099/60. Heading F3C. A gun comprises a unit 2, consisting of a barrel 279, slide 280, breech block 281 and nozzle brake 282, mounted for sliding action under recoil upon a cradle 3, the cradle 3 being mounted for sliding action under recoil upon a cradle 4. The cradle 4 is pivotally mounted on a carriage 6 to enable the gun to be elevated. The recoil mechanism restraining sliding movement of the unit 2 relatively to the cradle 3 is mounted in the cradle 3 and comprises a pair of oil-filled cylinders (Figs. 7, 9, not shown) containing pistons having rods, these rods being connected to the unit 2. The pistons have ports controlled by rotary valves and as the pistons move under recoil the valves are automatically progressively closed to restrict the flow of oil through the ports and thus oppose the recoil movement of the unit 2. The movement of the pistons under recoil also compresses springs which act as recuperators and eventually restore the unit 2 to its original position. Compensators situated at the front end of the cylinders serve to compensate for the vacuum set up therein as the pistons withdraw under recoil, by admitting more oil. The recoil mechanism restraining sliding movement of the cradle 3 relatively to the cradle 4 is mounted in the cradle 4 and comprises an oil-filled cylinder (Figs. 14, 16, not shown) containing a piston having a rod connected to the cradle 3. The piston has ports controlled by a rotary valve, this valve, together with other ported valves operating automatically during the recoil action to restrict the flow of oil through the ports to produce a retarding action of the cradle 3 in accordance with a parabolic law. The cradle 4 also supports a pair of spring recuperators (Fig. 17, not shown) which are stressed during the recoil action and return the cradle 3 to its original position upon the cradle 4. A recoil reducing mechanism (Figs. 10, 11, 12, not shown) automatically reduces the length of recoil of the piston in the cradle 4 when the gun inclination exceeds 30 degrees by reducing the maximum area of the valve ports. The several parts 279 ... 282 of the unit 2 are readily detachable from each other to facilitate transportation.
