Abstract

1,008,339. Metal-vapour lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 29, 1963 [May 2, 1962], No. 16721/63. Drawings to Specification. Heading H1D. A high-pressure mercury discharge lamp comprises a closed discharge vessel containing a rare gas, mercury, thallium, indium, sodium and iodine, the quantity of thallium being from 1.75 to 6.00% by weight of the quantity of mercury, the quantity of indium being from 0À10 to 2.50% by weight of the quantity of mercury, the quantity of sodium being larger than the quantity which would evaporate during normal operation of the lamp, the quantity of iodine being not less than the sum of the stoichiometric equivalents of the thallium, indium and sodium, and the quantity of iodine being less than the sum of the stoichiometric equivalents of the mercury, thallium, indium and sodium. The quantity of thallium is preferably from 3.50 to 5.50% by weight of the quantity of mercury, and the quantity of indium from 0À50 to 1.50% by weight of the quantity of mercury which is preferably between 5 and 20 mg. per cm. of arc length. The discharge vessel is mounted in an evacuated envelope containing a getter, e.g. of barium, and provided on at least one side with a thin infra-red reflecting layer of tin oxide having a resistance of between 30 and 60 ohms per square. The metal fillings may be present initially as iodides, or the iodides may be formed during operation of the lamp.
