Abstract

1,008,211. Piston and joint making packing. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938) Ltd. Aug. 13, 1964 [Nov. 25, 1963], No. 46425/63. Headings F2B and F2T. Packing for pistons, shafts, pipe joints &c. is mounted in a groove 1 in a member, e.g. an inner pipe section 2, and comprises two outer split metal springe rings 5 and 7 of triangular section which are urged both axially against the sides 4 of the groove and radially against a second member, e.g. an outer pipe section 3, by a triangular section inner split metal spring ring 6, resilient means such as L-shaped spring fingers being fastened to the base of the ring 6 and pressing against the bottom of the groove 1. When used as piston packing, radial grooves may be provided in the convergent faces of the ring 6 through which oil scraped from the cylinder wall may be discharged through ducts in the piston.
