Abstract
1,007,976. I.C. engine construction. C. A. V. Ltd. March 25, 1963 [Jan. 26, 1962], No. 3085/62. Heading F1B. [Also in Division F2] An I.C. engine comprises a main body to which are secured the inner metal plates 14, Fig. 2, of vibration damping panels each panel including an outer metal plate 15, Fig. 1, separated from the inner plate by resilient vibration absorbing material which has no rigid connection with the main body. The main body is of welded construction in which separately formed cylinders 8 are secured within apertures in the plates 6 and 7 which are interconnected by plates 9 between the first and second, and between the third and fourth cylinders. The crank-shaft bearings are combined with end plates 4 and plate 5. A further set of panels may be interposed between the main body and the vibration damping panels to prevent oil being thrown out. The inner steel plates 14 may be secured to the main body by an epoxy-resin cement or secured by bolts 18, the heads of which pass through clearance holes in the outer aluminium plate 15 and in a sheet 16 of synthetic rubber or expanded synthetic rubber which is bonded to plates 14, 15. In a modification the vibration damping material is a rubber ebvelope, filled with a glass-fibre mass and bonded to the plates 14, 15. In a further modification plates 14, 15 are interconnected at spaced positions by rubber bushes and fibre glass is inserted between the plates which may have a rubber lining. The panels may have weights in the range 0 5-51bs/sq. ft. and have a coefficient of damping (J) of- Xst J=-=0À1 where Xo Xst=static deflection and Xo=vibration amplitude at the same force.
