Abstract
1,007,461. Sensing icing conditions electrically. GARRETT CORPORATION. April 5, 1962 [April 6,1961], No.13229/62. Heading G1N . Apparatus for determining when the atmospheric humidity is such that icing conditions exist comprises two adjacent electrodes, maintained at a temperature above freezing point, which are short-circuited by condensed water vapour to operate a visual alarm. As shown, a thermistor 5 (Fig. 1), sensitive to ambient temperature, operates through a bridge circuit 10 to energize the measuring apparatus when the temperature falls to freezing point. A moisture-sensitive element comprises electrodes 7P, 7N which are shortcircuited when drops of moisture are formed between them, causing a lamp 20A to light. To prevent icing on the electrodes 7P, 7N they are maintained just above freezing point by a water 8 controlled by a local thermistor 9. The thermistors 5, 9 are located in a substantially cylindrical body 21 (Fig. 2), with the heater 8 and electrodes 7P, 7N wound on the outside. The electrodes may be coated with a salt to increase the conductivity of the moisture droplets. Specifications 1,007,462 and 1,007,463 are referred to.
