1,007,315. Determining relative quantities of fluid mixture constituents. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. July 19,1962 [July 21, 1961], No. 27740/62. Heading G1N. In an arrangement for the continuous conductometric analysis of a stream of a non aqueous solution, of an ion forming substance such as a water soluble or hydrolyzable compound e.g. boron trifluoride, in a non-polar liquid carrier such as a liquid hydrocarbon the sample stream is contacted with a substantially immiscible polar solvent stream, the sample and solvent streams are subsequently separated, and the conductivity of the solvent phase containing the ion forming consistuent is measured. A dipole moment greater than 0. 7 x 10-18 is specified for the solvent which should exhibit a preferential absoritivity for the ion-forming constituent, and the carrier component system may be a true solution, an emulsion, a chemical complex, or a slurry. Water, the sample and air are applied through lines 1, 4, 7 respectively and flow indicating controllers 3, 6, 9 to a spiral mixing chamber 10 feeding a separating chamber 11. Withdrawal line 14 for the solvent phase includes a conductivity cell 16 with electrodes 23, 22 coated with platinum black, and a temperature compensating device 18 such as a thermistor coupled to an indicating device 21 which may comprise a self balancing A.C.bridge. The flow of air is necessary to ensure intimacy of contact between the two streams. Drift error due to impurities in the water may be avoided by using distilled water from a large tank to which the system has been calibrated. A paddle type mixer may alternatively be employed and the mixer and separator may be replaced by a single vessel. The conductivity electrodes may be housed in the tank. The resistance measurement may be used for automatic control and the apparatus may be immersed in a bath of constant temperature.
