Abstract
Used lubricating oils are regenerated by heating with an aqueous solution of an alkali-metal condensed phosphate and/or acid orthophosphate to at least 50 DEG C. whereby the impurities are coagulated, and then separating the oily from the aqueous phase and from the impurities. The oil may be extracted before or after the treatment with an aqueous alkali. A surface active ethoxylated amine of the formula:- <FORM:1006888/C4-C5/1> where R is a hydrocarbon group of at least 8 carbon atoms, x is 0 to 5, and (n + m) is 5 to 50, may be present during the heating. The treated oil may be further contacted with activated earths, and finally distilled. The preferred phosphate is sodium tripolyphosphate. Specification 783,033 is referred to.
