Abstract
Molten polyethylene terephthalate is preserved from deterioration by holding it above its melting-point but not higher than 300 DEG C. and at a holding pressure (P) in the range 1.5 to 14 mm. Hg. which satisfies the formula log10P = -4.2 x 10-4 Mn0.82+2.2\sB0.5 where Mn is the number average molecular weight of the polyester. The polyethylene terephthalate may contain additives, e.g. pigments, delustrants, stabilizers or catalysts (many specified). Up to 30% of the residue in the polyethylene terephthalate may be those of copolymerizable components.
