Abstract

Aqueous solutions of heterocyclic quaternary ammonium salts are electrolysed to deposit cathodically the anhydro-base of the salt which are hydrophobic, non-ionizing, and of high electrical resistance. Those salts which contain an active methyl or methylene group in the 2-position produce deposits which are either coloured or are known colour precursors and are substantially insoluble. Examples are given of the use of tetrazolium, pyridinium, quinolinium, benzthiazolium, and isothiouronium salts which may be used in conjunction with other colour-producing organic compounds such as diazonium or other quaternary ammonium salts, aldehydes, quinones or oxidized colour developers or lead acetate.
