Abstract
An olefinic hydrocarbon having at least 3C per mol. is polymerized alone or with at least one other polymerizable or copolymizerable compound in the presence of a catalyst made by treating an anhydrous K compound (preferably K2CO3) with a Na or Li solution in liquid NH3 or a lower alkylamine, i.e. methylamine or ethylamine, followed by removal of the solvent by evaporation. Suitable olefines are propylene, isobutylene, butadiene and isoprene or mixtures thereof or mixtures with ethylene. Products specified from propylene are 4-methyl-pentenes-1 and -2, 3-methyl-pentenes 1 and -2, and 2-methyl-pentenes-1 and -2. Specification 933,253 is referred to.ALSO:Polymerization catalysts are made by treating an anhydrous potassium compound with a solution of sodium or lithium in liquid NH3 or a lower primary alkylamine, i.e. methylamine or ethylamine, and thereafter evaporating the ammonia or alkylamine. The anhydrous K compound may be a halide, sulphate or silicate but is preferably K2CO3 or KOH. The preparation may be carried out batchwise or continuously. Used catalysts may be regenerated by contact with solutions of Na or Li as above. An example is given. Specification 933,253 is referred to.
