In a counter in which numeral wheels and transfer mechanism are of plastics material, misoperation is prevented by locating the transfer wheels 14 on a shaft 8 by teeth 52 of a plate with a relatively low coefficient of linear expansion. The apparatus is preferably as described in Specifications 985,778 and 1,005,271, which are referred to.
