Abstract
1,005,268. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILCO CORPORATION. Oct. 23, 1962 [Oct. 23, 1961; Oct. 24, 1961 (2)], No. 40053/62. Heading H1D. The electrodes 21, 26, 30, 31 of a constricted neck cathode ray tube 10 are secured to a ceramic tube 23 by metal studs 24 which are welded to the electrodes and frictionally engage apertures 25 in the tube 23. The tube-electrode structure is supported at its lower end by terminal pins 13 secured to the control grid 21 and at its upper end by snubbers 33 secured to anode 31, the remaining tube members comprising a screen grid 26, a third grid 30, a getter ring 32 and a cathode 16 having a heater 15. The studs 24 are connected to the terminal pins 13 by leads 37. The structure is assembled by mounting the tube 23 and its associated electrodes in their desired spaced relation using a shaped fixture 35 and clamping screw 36, as shown in Fig. 6, the studs 24 then being pressed through the apertures 25 by a resistance welding electrode which is used to weld the stud to the corresponding electrode, Fig. 2 (not shown). Finally, a lead 37 is welded to each stud. In a modification, Figs. 3, 4 and 5 (not shown) the studs comprise oblique sections of a cylindrical rod, each stud thus making point contact with the tube and its associated electrode. In another modification, each stud comprises a member 47 having resilient legs 49 engaging the aperture walls, and a spherical base 48 welded to the electrode. The member 47 may be formed integral with a lead 37 to avoid the second welding operation during assembly, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown). The studs may be welded singly or simultaneously in groups.
