Abstract
In a metal phosphatizing process an ester of an acid of phosphorus is applied to the metal surface either with or before the application of a water soluble phosphorus compound. Aqueous phosphatizing compositions for treating steel which may be zinc coated, contain the ester and at least one of Zn dihydrogen and monosodium phosphates; phosphoric, ortho-phosporic and nitric acids; Na hemiphosphate; Ni nitrate hexahydrate; ethylene glycol monobutyl ether; organic detergents and wetting agents, e.g. polystyrene sulphonic acid and ethylene glycol monobutyl ether. Esters referred to are tripropyl, tributyl, &c., tri-isopropyl, tributoxyethyl, tri-2 ethyl hexyl, triphenyl, Na diphenol and tri-lauryl phosphates; tributyl and tri-isopropyl phosphites; tetraethyl pyrophosphate and phosphonic acid esters. The ester may alternatively be added to a cleaning composition comprising nonyl phenol polyoxyethylene ethanol, tannic acid, morpholene and xylene sodium sulphonate which may be applied prior to phosphatizing or in admixture with the phosphating bath. Spraying and immersion processes are referred to and coating times, temperatures and densities; spray pressures, pH values and percentages of components in baths are given.
