Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1004659/C2/1> where R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen atoms or hydroxyl, alkoxy or aralkoxy radicals or R2 and R3 when occupying adjacent ring positions, represent a methylenedioxy radical, and n is 2 or 3; and salts thereof and the preparation thereof whereby an amine of the formula <FORM:1004659/C2/2> is reduced together with a phenyl propanone of the formula <FORM:1004659/C2/3> the reduction being carried out electrolytically, by catalytic, hydrogenation, by means of nascent hydrogen or with the use of complex metal hydrides, mild conditions being used when R2 and R3 represent alkoxy or aryloxy radicals or together represent a methylenedioxy group and a modification of the above process wherein the amine and phenylpropanone are reacted together and the condensation product, so obtained, reduced. The compounds of the formula I are also prepared by reaction of an amine of the formula II with a halide of the formula <FORM:1004659/C2/4> where Hal represents a halogen atom and by reaction of an amine of the formula <FORM:1004659/C2/5> with a halide of the formula <FORM:1004659/C2/6> these processes being optionally carried out in the presence of an additional molar amount of amine to bind the liberated hydrogen halide or in the presence of an acid-binding agent, and by reduction of an amide of the formula <FORM:1004659/C2/7> electrolytically, by catalytic hydrogenation, by means of nascent hydrogen or with the use of complex metal hydrides, mild conditions being used when R2 and R3 represent alkoxy or aryloxy radicals or together represent a methylenedioxy group. Where any of the above processes give a product when R1 represents a hydrogen atom the said product may be alkylated and where R2 and R3 represent alkoxy or aryloxy groups, the product can be converted to the corresponding hydroxy compound.
