Abstract

In the electrolysis of hydrochloric acid the over-voltage is reduced by adding from 10 to 100 p.p.m. of platinum or palladium ions to the electrolyte. The metals may be added as Pt chloride or oxide, or chlor-platinic acid; palladium chloride, hydroxide, or hydrochloro-palladic acid. It is stated that durng electrolysis a thin film of the metal is formed on the electrode, and that the voltage required to electrolyse 25 to 30 per cent HCl in a diaphragmed cell is reduced by 20 to 30 per cent i.e. to about 1.6V. Details and graphs are given for the voltages required for a range of concentrations of different metals. Specification 834,640 is referred to.
